The holidays are supposed to feel joyful, but for so many women, they feel like a second full-time job. Between hosting, gifting, wrapping, cooking, traveling, planning, and managing everyone else’s emotions, the mental load and the financial pressure can leave even the strongest women completely drained.
At Purse Strings, we are here to call out the truth. You do not have to run yourself ragged to create a meaningful holiday season. When you protect your time, energy, and money, you protect your well-being, your relationships, and your long-term financial confidence.
This conversation features insights from Maggie Nielsen, along with two powerhouse financial professionals
Julia Steinberg, Founder and Financial Coach
Melissa Murphy Pavone, CFP®, CDFA®, Founder at Mindful Financial Partners
They unpack the blind spots, pressure points, and emotional traps women fall into during the holidays and how to shift into a season that actually feels good.
Start the Season With Intention, Not Exhaustion
Most women enter the holidays already behind too many commitments, too much pressure, too much expectation. Instead of asking how to get it all done, Julia and Melissa encouraged women to pause and ask:
What actually matters to me and my family this year
Where do I want my time, energy, and money to go
Setting intention is not fluff. It is a financial and emotional strategy that helps you stop reacting and start choosing.
The Blind Spots That Drain High-Achieving Women
Social Comparison: The Holiday Highlight Reel
As soon as holiday cards and matching pajamas hit Instagram, the comparison starts and so does the overspending. The truth is that traditions do not have to be picture-perfect to be meaningful. The joy comes from what happens in your home, not someone else’s curated display.
Saying Yes to Everything
Women are conditioned to keep everyone happy so we say yes to every invitation, every event, every extra task until we are exhausted. A pause before the yes can be life changing.
Does this bring me joy or does it drain me
If it drains you, the answer is no. Your time, energy, and money matter.
Trying to Do Everything Alone
High achieving women often carry the invisible labor of the holidays. Doing everything by yourself does not make you the hero. It makes you burned out.
Ask for help. Hire help. Delegate. Let your partner take the lead. Or simply say you cannot take something on this year.
Your holiday should not depend on you carrying the entire load.
Choose Your Holiday Intention
Julia and Melissa encouraged every woman to set a simple intention for the season.
- Peace over perfection
- Presence over pressure
- Connection over comparison
- Rest over rushing
When you know your intention, decision making becomes clearer financially, emotionally, and socially.
A Holiday Season That Feels Good Not Just Looks Good
The biggest takeaway is this
You get to decide what your holiday looks like.
Say yes to what fills you up.
Say no to what drains you.
Ask for help. Release the guilt. Protect your financial wellbeing.
A joyful season does not require burnout or overspending. It requires intention, boundaries, and permission to let go of the perfect holiday myth.
Wishing you a grounded, joyful, financially confident holiday season from all of us at Purse Strings.
