Protect What Matters: Estate Planning, Executors & Your Legacy
Estate planning isn’t just paperwork—it’s a love letter to your family.
It’s about protecting your people, your wishes, and your legacy when life throws the unexpected your way. And while many women think “estate planning” is only for the wealthy, the truth is: if you have people you love or assets you care about, you need a plan.
We recently sat down with Stephanie Posey of Posey Law Group, who broke down what estate planning really means, why it matters, and how to start.
Why Estate Planning Matters
Estate planning gives your loved ones clarity in the middle of chaos.
No plan can stop grief, but having your wishes in writing helps the people you trust act quickly, avoid costly court battles, and carry out decisions with confidence. Without it? You leave your family guessing—and sometimes fighting.
An estate plan means your healthcare, financial, and personal decisions aren’t left to chance or to the courts. It’s about taking control now so your loved ones don’t have to figure it out later.
What Goes Into an Estate Plan
Stephanie broke it down simply: in Illinois (and most states), the core documents include:
- A will (who gets what, and who takes care of your dependents)
- A financial power of attorney (who can make financial decisions if you can’t)
- A healthcare power of attorney (who can make medical decisions on your behalf)
- A living will (your wishes for care if you’re incapacitated)
Together, these documents act as your voice when you can’t speak for yourself.
How to Prepare
Before you head to an attorney, start with a personal inventory. List out your assets—your home, accounts, retirement savings, even digital logins. This gives your pros a roadmap to work with.
And don’t stop there. Talk with the people you’re naming in your plan. Make sure they understand the responsibility, are willing to step in, and know what matters to you.
Why Professional Guidance Matters
This isn’t something to DIY from a random template online. The right professionals—a trusted attorney, financial advisor, and CPA—make sure your plan is airtight, efficient, and tailored to you.
That’s why Purse Strings exists: to connect women with vetted professionals who understand women, money, and the importance of protecting what matters most.
The Takeaway: Don’t Wait
Stephanie left us with one simple truth: the best time to start your estate plan is now. Not when it’s urgent. Not when emotions are running high. Now. Because estate planning isn’t about anticipating death—it’s about showing love, responsibility, and care while you’re here. It’s a gift to your family. A plan that brings clarity instead of conflict. And a way to know your legacy will live exactly how you want it to.
