Let’s be real: life doesn’t always wait until we’re “ready” to throw a big expense our way. A surprise tax bill. A broken furnace. A family wedding across the country. These are the real-life curveballs that can shake even the most put-together woman’s budget. But here’s the good news: with a little planning and the right mindset, you can handle these moments with confidence—not chaos.

We recently sat down with Lindsey Ciarrocca, one of our Purse Strings Approved Professionals and a budgeting expert, to talk about what it really takes to prepare for major expenses before they knock you off your feet.

Let’s Call It What It Is: Expected “Unexpected” Expenses

Home repairs, car maintenance, medical bills—they’re going to happen. Lindsey reminds us that “everything in life needs maintenance,” and that’s a mindset shift that can save you stress (and money). These costs might not hit every month, but they’re not surprises either. So what do you do? You plan for them anyway.

Save Smart—with Systems That Work for You

One of Lindsey’s top tips? Treat these big expenses like monthly bills. Set up automatic transfers to a savings account—ideally one that’s not connected to your everyday checking account. Out of sight, out of temptation. She also recommends high-yield savings accounts (she personally uses Ally Bank) to help your savings grow while they sit. And don’t stress if you can’t build a 6-month emergency fund overnight. Start with a goal of $500 or $1,000. Every little bit builds your safety net.

Budgeting = Freedom, Not Restriction

Let’s flip the script: budgeting isn’t about saying “no” to yourself—it’s about saying “yes” with intention. Whether you’re managing debt or finally ready to take control of your money story, a budget is a powerful tool. Lindsey is a fan of YNAB (You Need A Budget), which helps you give every dollar a job and create a plan that reflects your life.

Prefer to keep it simple? Try the 50/30/20 rule: 50% for needs, 30% for wants, 20% for savings or debt repayment. Either way, tracking your spending is the first step to making smarter choices.

Lindsey’s Quick-Start Tips for Budgeting Smarter

  • Know where your money’s going before trying to redirect it
  • Match your bill payments to your paychecks to ease cash flow
  • Cut with purpose—temporary trims can create long-term breathing room
  • Boost your income where you can (hello, side hustle or monetized hobby!)

If Your Income Isn’t Steady, Your Plan Still Can Be

For women with irregular income, budgeting can feel extra intimidating—but that’s exactly why it’s so important. Tools like YNAB help you stretch what you have now across what’s coming next, so you’re never caught completely off guard.
