Investing with Intention: Socially Responsible Investing

Money is power. And more women than ever are asking: What is my money actually supporting?
It’s no longer enough for our investments to just make money—we want them to reflect our values. That’s where Socially Responsible Investing (SRI), also called ESG investing, comes in. ESG stands for Environmental, Social, and Governance. In plain English, it means putting your dollars behind companies that are doing right by people, the planet, and good business practices—not just chasing profits at all costs.
And here’s the best part: aligning your money with your values doesn’t mean sacrificing returns. You can have both impact and growth.
What Exactly is ESG Investing?
Think of ESG as a lens for your money:
- E – Environmental: How does this company impact the planet? Are they reducing emissions, using clean energy, managing waste responsibly?
- S – Social: How do they treat people? Are they diverse and inclusive? Do they support fair labor practices and engage in their communities?
- G – Governance: How are they run? Are they transparent? Do they have fair leadership and ethical business practices?
Instead of only asking “Will this investment make money?” ESG investing adds the question: “Does this company reflect my values while it makes money?”
Why ESG is Growing—Even in Uncertain Times
You’d think with economic and political turbulence, investors would stick to “safe” and familiar strategies. But the opposite is happening. ESG investing is growing—fast.
Why? Because people are waking up to the fact that our dollars aren’t neutral. Every investment supports a company, a system, and ultimately, a vision of the future.
Women especially are driving this shift. We want our portfolios to reflect not just financial goals, but personal ones—supporting businesses that prioritize sustainability, social justice, and ethical leadership. It’s not about being “soft.” It’s about being intentional.
How to Get Started with ESG
Beth Wahlig, a Purse Strings Approved Professional who specializes in ESG, shared her advice: start with your values.
Ask yourself:
- What issues matter most to me? Climate change? Diversity in leadership? Worker protections?
- What industries do I want to avoid?
- Do I want my portfolio to reflect a specific story—like sustainability, equity, or women’s empowerment?
Once you know your “why,” there are straightforward ways to start:
- ESG ETFs (Exchange Traded Funds): These are like baskets of companies that already pass certain values-based screens. You don’t need to hand-pick every investment—ETFs let you invest broadly in companies that align with ESG principles. Big names like BlackRock, Invesco, and State Street all offer ESG-focused ETFs.
- Screening tools and questionnaires: Many advisors (including Purse Strings Pros!) use tools to help you identify what matters most, and then tailor investments to match.
- Mix and match: You don’t have to go “all in” overnight. You can start by shifting part of your portfolio to ESG-focused funds while keeping other investments in place.
ETFs: The Modern Investment Vehicle
Beth pointed out that ETFs are one of the easiest on-ramps to ESG investing. Unlike traditional mutual funds, ETFs give you:
- Real-time pricing (so you can see changes throughout the day)
- Lower costs in many cases
- Diversification across multiple companies and industries
And they’re widely available across sectors—from renewable energy to sustainable agriculture—making it easier than ever to put your money where your values are.
But Does ESG Actually Perform?
Here’s the myth: “If you invest with your values, you’ll lose money.”
Here’s the truth: research increasingly shows that ESG investments perform just as well—or better—than traditional investments.
It makes sense. Companies that plan for the future, treat employees fairly, and manage resources responsibly tend to be less risky and more sustainable in the long run.
So no, ESG investing isn’t a charity move. It’s a smart move.
Challenges to Keep in Mind
That said, ESG isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution. Definitions can vary, and not every fund labeled “ESG” has the same standards. This is where professional guidance matters—working with a trusted advisor helps you cut through the noise, avoid “greenwashing,” and ensure your investments truly match your values.
The Bigger Picture: Your Money, Your Story
Beth emphasizes that ESG investing isn’t just about screens and strategies—it’s about telling a story with your portfolio. When you choose companies that reflect your principles, your money becomes an extension of your values.
Want to fight climate change? Invest in renewable energy.
Want to support equity? Invest in companies with women and diverse leaders.
Want to reward transparency? Support businesses that operate ethically.
This is how you align your financial future with the future you want to see.
The Bottom Line
Socially Responsible Investing isn’t a trend. It’s a movement—and women are leading it.
At Purse Strings, we believe money is power. ESG investing gives you the power to build wealth while pushing for real change in the world. It’s not about doing less with your money—it’s about doing more.
So ask yourself: where is your money going, and does it reflect what you stand for?
Because investing isn’t just about your future portfolio. It’s about the future, period.
