Breaking Barriers and Building Confidence: Reflections on Money Talks: Mastering Money Fearlessly
Coming off the high of our first in-person event, Money Talks: Mastering Money Fearlessly, we’re filled with gratitude and excitement. Partnering with Bernie’s Book Bank brought our shared vision to life: to empower people through foundational skills that unlock a world of choices. We kicked off the event with an inspiring talk by Brian Floriani, founder of Bernie’s Book Bank, who shared his story of confronting childhood literacy head-on. Without prior nonprofit experience, he leaped fearlessly into creating an organization that provides kids with the literacy tools they need to chart their futures. At Purse Strings, we resonate deeply with this mission. Just as literacy empowers kids, financial literacy gives women the knowledge to make life-altering choices.
For Maggie and me, starting Purse Strings meant stepping out onto a very skinny branch. We aimed to create a financial resource model that simply didn’t exist before, giving women access to tools and professional guidance to take control of their finances and futures. It’s scary to break new ground, to be women leading the charge in a largely male-dominated industry, and to believe we can drive real change. But here’s the truth: we’re doing it, and so is Bernie’s Book Bank.
One of the most challenging barriers we face is encouraging women to feel comfortable talking about money. Many carry guilt or shame over financial choices or over what they “should have” known. However, the women who attended Money Talks were fearless in facing their financial realities head-on. They asked insightful questions, listened deeply, and walked away empowered and ready to take action. Throughout the day, our expert speakers led sessions on real topics that many women deal with every day, yet often feel unsure or even embarrassed to discuss. We talked about caregiving and how it uniquely affects women financially. We delved into the difficult aspects of divorce: the good, the bad, and the ugly.
We discussed money management strategies, ways to boost credit scores, and developing a strong money mindset. These are topics that matter, and we’re grateful to have hosted an event where women felt safe and supported in these discussions.
Looking around the room, we couldn’t help but smile at the sight of women taking notes, asking questions, and sometimes offering each other comfort. They left with new financial goals, contacts for trusted professionals, and the assurance that they’re not alone on this journey. We talked openly about money, and no one died.
Here are five things we learned from Money Talks: Mastering Money Fearlessly
Women Are Ready to Talk—They Just Need a Safe Space
For many women, money remains a sensitive, even intimidating, topic. Yet, given a supportive and judgment-free environment, they’re eager to open up. Our attendees proved that when women feel safe, they’re ready to tackle complex financial conversations. They want to talk about caregiving, understand the financial impact of divorce, and learn how to manage money better. The sense of relief was palpable as they shared experiences and found common ground. Creating these safe spaces isn’t just nice; it’s essential for empowering real change.
Empowerment Comes from Education, Not Sales Pitches
Financial education doesn’t happen in a sales environment. Our attendees wanted knowledge, not products, and we were committed to offering unbiased, useful guidance. We focused on providing actionable advice on managing money, improving credit scores, and building healthy financial habits. By removing the pressure to buy anything, we created a space where women felt comfortable and confident in asking questions. They could engage fully, knowing that our experts were there to teach, not sell. This kind of education empowers women to make informed decisions for themselves—free from sales gimmicks.
Collective Support Eases Financial Anxiety
Talking about money can bring up a lot of insecurities, and it’s often an isolating experience. But in that room, each woman realized she wasn’t alone. From dealing with caregiving responsibilities to facing financial setbacks from divorce, the challenges shared were met with collective empathy and understanding. Seeing others navigate similar paths built a strong sense of community, helping to break down financial anxieties. When one woman asked a question, others chimed in, offering experiences and insights. This collective support transformed an intimidating topic into something manageable, even empowering.
Financial Literacy Gives You Choices—and Choices Give You Freedom
Just as literacy is the gateway to opportunities, financial literacy opens doors to a life of choice and freedom. During the event, we covered foundational skills that many women haven’t been given the opportunity to learn. We discussed how a positive money mindset, coupled with strategies to build credit, can shift how women feel about their financial futures. Knowing how to manage money is about more than paying bills—it’s about creating options, having a safety net, and taking control of one’s future. Many attendees left with a sense of freedom they hadn’t experienced before, and they realized that financial literacy is the bridge to a life of choice.
Courage is Contagious
Throughout the day, we witnessed the ripple effect of courage. One woman’s bravery of telling her story about events in her life that greatly impacted her finances inspired others to open up about their own challenges. Just as Brian Floriani’s fearless dedication to addressing literacy inspired us, the courage of each attendee encouraged others to speak their truth, confront financial fears, and make commitments to their futures. This courage, fueled by the support in the room, will have lasting effects. When one woman steps up, it encourages others to do the same, sparking a powerful cycle of bravery and change.
Money Talks: Mastering Money Fearlessly was more than an event; it was a movement towards greater financial freedom for women. It was a celebration of our strength, curiosity, and the courage that we as women bring to the table. We’re thrilled to continue this journey, breaking down the barriers around money, and providing women with the tools they need to live financially fearless lives. Together, we’re reshaping the conversation around money, one empowering event at a time.
